چکیده

In the path minima problem on a tree, each edge is assigned a weight and a query asks for the edge with minimum weight on a path between two nodes. For the dynamic version of the problem, where the edge weights can be updated, we give data structures that achieve optimal query time in the comparison and the RAM models. These structures also support inserting a node on an edge, inserting a leaf, and contracting edges. When only insertion and deletion of leaves are desired, we give data structures in the comparison and the RAM models, with optimal query time that is significantly lower than when updating the weights is allowed. We also consider the problem in the semigroup model, and show lower bounds for different variants of the problem.

Finding Path Minima in Incremental Unrooted Trees∗

Consider a dynamic forest of unrooted trees over a set of n vertices which we update by link operations: Each link operation adds a new edge adjacent to vertices in two different trees. Every edge in the forest has a weight associated with it, and at any time we want to be able to answer a path-min query which returns that edge of minimum weight along the path between two given vertices. For th...

In-Memory Storage for Labeled Tree-Structured Data

In this thesis, we design in-memory data structures for labeled and weights trees, so that various types of path queries or operations can be supported with efficient query time. We assume the word RAM model with word size w, which permits random accesses to w-bit memory cells. Our data structures are space-efficient and many of them are even succinct. These succinct data structures occupy spac...

Extremal Weighted Path Lengths in Random Binary Search Trees

We consider weighted path lengths to the extremal leaves in a random binary search tree. When linearly scaled, the weighted path length to the minimal label has Dickman’s infinitely divisible distribution as a limit. By contrast, the weighted path length to the maximal label needs to be centered and scaled to converge to a standard normal variate in distribution. The exercise shows that path le...

Reconstructing a Bounded-Degree Directed Tree Using Path Queries

We present a randomized algorithm for reconstructing directed rooted trees of n nodes and node degree at most d, by asking at most O(dn log n) path queries. Each path query takes as input an origin node and a target node, and answers whether there is a directed path from the origin to the target. Our algorithm is only a factor of O(d log n) from the informationtheoretic lower bound of Ω(n log n...

Dynamic Subtrees Queries Revisited: The Depth First Tour Tree

In the dynamic tree problem the goal is the maintenance of an arbitrary n-vertex forest, where the trees are subject to joining and splitting by, respectively, adding and removing edges. Depending on the application, information can be associated to nodes or edges (or both), and queries might require to combine values in path or (sub)trees. In this paper we present a novel data structure, calle...
